Cotton Candy Tri-Color Melt Using Kenra Creatives

By: Wesley Boyce

Wearing creative colors in your hair is a great way to express individuality, personality, and flare. In this step by step, we’ll show how to do a fantastic placement using three different colors to achieve a beautiful, creative color melt.

When using creatives, the client will need to be pre-lightened for maximum vibrancy. Assess texture and porosity and formulate accordingly.

Sectioning: Start with a center, triangular fringe section about 2" away from the hairline and create additional triangles all over the head, working off the original triangle. The
second set of triangles around the hairline should be sectioned by starting from the apex of the head and coming down to just in front of the ears. Triangles should be relatively consistent in size throughout the head. Make sure that the parietal ridge is split between a few triangles to break up the weight in that area with dimensional sections. It is okay for this to vary slightly from client to client depending on their head size and shape as well as hair texture and density.

step 1

Formulas:
Base Formula
– 10 Parts Violet + 1 Part True Black
Formula 2 - Equal Parts Magenta + Violet
Formula 3 - Equal Parts Magenta + Red

formula

Pro Tip: Test your creative formulations on white paper or a paper towel to ensure you have the perfect tone before applying.

Step 1: Start in the lowest back center triangle and start applying the Base Formula at the base (makes sense, right?) Then, melt into Formula 2 on the mids and then melt into Formula 3 on the mids/ends. Continue this same pattern throughout the triangle.

step 1

Step 2: Continue using the Base Formula at the base throughout the other triangles but alternate the placement of Formula 2 and Formula 3 as you work up the head. Make sure that the two side sections have the same pattern for continuity. In this case, the model has the Base Formula melted into Formula 2 into Formula 3.

step 2

Step 3: In the final, fringe section that was sectioned initially, drop down to using two colors instead of three for higher contrast. In this case, the model will have the Base Formula melted into Formula 3 only (Magenta + Red) to pop against the violet on the mids on the two side sections. Work in diagonal subsections and bring the colored pieces to the back, resting on the head.

step 3

Step 4: Process without heat for up to 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water and follow up with Kenra Color Maintenance Shampoo & Conditioner.

step 4

Step 5: Style using your favorite Kenra Professional wetline products, using a heat protector such as Color Charge Spray Serum and use low heat if using hot tools.
